2020.06.08 John B. Castleman, Louisville, Kentucky USA
On 2020.06.08 the John B. Castleman statue located in Cherokee Triangle in Louisville, KY was removed and brought to a storage facility in anticipation of moving to Cave Hill Cemetery, where Castleman is buried.
The mayor, Greg Fischer, first made the announcement to remove the monument in 2018 following review of a report issued by the Public Art and Monuments Advisory Committee, however the Friends of Louisville Public Art appealed the decision to Jefferson Circuit Court.
Before city officials moved the Castleman statue it was frequently vandalized.
At that time, the city couldn't move the Castleman monument because it needed a Certificate of Appropriateness since it was located in the Cherokee Triangle Preservation District. The Architectural Review Committee denied the certificate in January 2019. The city appealed the decision to the Landmarks Commission which approved the monument's move in May 2019. The Friends of Louisville Public Art appealed the decision to Jefferson Circuit Court, which denied the appeal, clearing the way for the statue's move in 2020.
As of 2020.10.18 the monument is still in storage but the Friends of Louisville Public Art filed an appeal to the Circuit Court in hopes of overturning a ruling that allowed the city to remove the statue.
