2020.07.27 Henry County Confederate Monument
McDonough, Georgia USA

The McDonough Square Confederate Veterans Monument was erected in 1911 on land publicly owned by the county. On July 7, 2020, Henry County Commissioners voted 4 - 1 to remove the monument within sixty days of the vote.

Local chapters of Sons of the Confederacy and other groups with ties to white supremacist organizations vehemently opposed the monument’s removal, filing numerous court cases against individuals in municipal government as well as government entities. All went in favor of the monument’s removal. Opponents to the monument’s removal also attempted to frame commissioners for various violations through doctored social media posts. County Commissioners kept confidential any information pertinent to the date of the monument’s removal. On July 28, 2020, the monument was removed from its pedestal and placed in county storage. Today the pedestal remains in McDonough Square, and residents continue to advocate for its placement in a museum or cemetery.
